Start Planning in Early Fall So You Don't Ruin Your Credit This Christmas

At Christmas, we all like to make everyone happy. To do this, we sometimes purchase many gifts, large gifts and even those that are just overpriced. This is the time to celebrate and to show everyone just how much we love them. Yet, it’s also the prime time to ruin your credit score too.

During the holidays, we like to pull out the plastic and use it to fund all of the necessary purchases that we make. Yet, each time we do that, what we should be seeing are the finance charges for doing so.

If you pick up a great gift for your mother on sale and think that you’re getting a great deal, you may be wrong if you charge it. The fact is that it’s likely to take several months to pay off that credit and, in that time, it will probably cost you quite a bit of money in the process in finance charges. Save up ahead of time to avoid financial ruin during the season of giving.

How to Use Credit Wisely During the Holidays

Most of us wouldn’t know what to do without our trusty credit card by our side. If you’re making purchases online, it’s even more difficult to skip the plastic. There’s no need to do that, but follow these tips to ensure that when you do, it ends up being well worth it.

• Budget how much credit you can afford to spend and pay off in the shortest time possible. For example, how much can you comfortably pay back within a time of one to three months? Longer than this and the finance charges are likely to sting.

• Notice the value of something as it compares to the long term cost if you don’t pay your credit off within a couple of months. Is it worth it?

• Make a budget for yourself for your overall spending for this holiday season. How much do you plan to spend in total? Now, give each person a percentage or dollar amount of that budget that you will spend on them. This way, you can keep the costs down and still give them the right type of gift. No one is left out, you just budgeted wisely.

• Purchase a meaningful gift rather than one that’s overly expensive. There’s no need to purchase something that’s too costly but has little meaning. Instead, look for something that will really mean something to those that you love.

When it comes to using credit this holiday season, it’s imperative that we select the very best gifts to give so that we don’t feel as if we’re giving something that isn’t going to be loved.

Yet, we also need to take into consideration the fact that it can be wiser to purchase something that has more meaning rather than something that has a high price tag associated with it.

This year, for the holiday season, keep your credit out of ruin by making good financial decisions about the purchases that you make. What’s more is that your family is not likely to disown you if you purchase them less or if you select a more meaningful gift for them. They’ll probably be happy that you didn’t put yourself in debt for them, too.
